Imagine a place that you could easily drive to on a tank of gas that could provide you and your family or friends, with brilliant color, diverse trails and some of the finest hunting, fishing and ATV riding, only 10 minutes from your hotel. That is what Marquette Country, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, can offer you this fall.
As September turns into October, and the brilliant fall color begins, bikers can enjoy the numerous trails available in the county. The 13 mile long bike path along the shores of Lake Superior and Marquette’s downtown waterfront offer up a paved pathway along the beaches, a panorama of color, awesome Lake Superior working up the wave action and even one of our Great Ladies, our ore freighters, loading up iron ore pellets at
the Presque Isle Ore dock. These freighters are so close to the biker, you can almost reach out and touch them. Biking around Presque Isle in the fall takes your breath away during your ride in the tunnel of foliage that covers the path. Rounding the Island on the west, if you are lucky and the mighty lake is churning up 10ft waves, the local surfers are riding the waves and showing off their “stuff”. Days like this in the fall are the norm and it is all there for you to enjoy.
With two climbing attractions within a few short minutes of downtown Marquette, Sugarloaf Mountain and Mt. Marquette, you can have a panoramic view of the Marquette to Big Bay shorelines dressed up in their fall color. Mt. Marquette is accessible via walking, biking or driving, while Sugarloaf Mountain is a few short miles up county road 550 and has a parking lot with a walking trail to the top. Both are “must do’s” for fall.
But, what if you don’t want to pedal on the bike trails, but instead enjoy a ride in the forest with your partner, your favorite gun, looking for ruffed grouse. Marquette County has some of the best ruffed grouse hunting in the Midwest, with miles and miles of state forest to enjoy hunting and riding in. Information on the state forest available for hunting and ATV riding is available at the local DNR office in Marquette, at (906) 228-6561.
